The Bachelor of Science in Music Education (Instrumental/General Music Track) at ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Southeast prepares you to become a licensed music educator in Indiana and Kentucky. This program is designed for those who want to teach band, orchestra, and general music in elementary, middle, or high school settings.
As a Music Education major in the Instrumental/General track, you’ll learn how to:
Develop musicianship and technique on your primary instrument
Develop conducting skills for instrumental ensembles of all levels.
Teach general music curriculum to K–12 students.
Design developmentally appropriate and effective lesson plans that meet music education standards.
Apply effective teaching strategies, classroom management, and assessment to your teaching practice.
Integrate music theory, history, and performance into your teaching practice.
This degree combines intensive musical study with a solid foundation in the theory and methods of teaching and learning. You'll be supported by experienced faculty from both the School of Arts & Letters and the School of Education.
At IU Southeast, classroom experience begins early. You’ll participate in extensive field placements throughout the program, gaining hands-on teaching experience local schools throughout the region. You’ll observe, assist, and lead music instruction in real K-12 classrooms, preparing you with the skills an confidence to be an outstanding music educator.

The Music Education program at IU Southeast is a joint effort between the Music Department in the School of Arts & Letters and the School of Education, giving you access to expert faculty in both music and pedagogy. You’ll work alongside fellow students who share your passion for teaching, and you’ll be supported every step of the way with advising and academic guidance from both schools.

Admission to the Music Education program is selective, and students are encouraged to apply early and prepare thoroughly for the audition process. Once accepted, you’ll begin building your skills as both a musician and an educator.
