Student Research and Creativity
IU Southeast encourages and supports students to engage in research and creative activities. Transformative research and creativity is a central tenet of our campus strategic plan. The campus is committed to involving our students in our research mission which serves to advance our students’ intellectual and career development.
The campus provides several mechanisms of support for student research and creative work. These include mentorship and financial support for students to engage in research and creativity and sponsorship of events, travel and publications for students to disseminate their scholarly products.
Funding for Students to Conduct Research and Creative Activity
- Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply.
- All funding is awarded on a competitive basis.
- Students who receive funding are required to disseminate their projects at an IU Southeast student conference.
- Student Research/Creativity Fellowship - Students apply for funding to support their own independent project conducted under the guidance of a faculty mentor. These are awarded in the fall and spring. (See below for information about applying for the Student Research/Creativity Fellowship)
Funding for Students to Assist Faculty in Research and Creative Activity
- Student Assistant Grant – Faculty apply for funding that can support a student to be an assistant in the conduct of research. These are awarded in the fall and spring.
Funding for Students to Present Research and Creative Activity
- Student Travel Award – Faculty apply for funding to support a student to travel to disseminate research/creative activity or to participate in a scholarly conference.
Opportunities to Disseminate Research and Creative Activity
IU Southeast presents a variety of opportunities for students to disseminate their research and creative activity at conferences and in publications.
- Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to submit.
- Conference dates including abstract submission dates vary each year. Conference dates and abstract submission deadlines will be announced using a variety of communication mechanisms including email announcements.
- Students are typically required to work with a mentor/faculty member for all presentation opportunities.

Student Research and Creativity Fellowships
These fellowships support IU Southeast students pursuing major independent research or creative projects under the guidance of a faculty mentor. All students—regardless of discipline, credit hours, or enrollment status—are encouraged to apply.
Eligibility
- Must be currently enrolled at IU Southeast
- Open to all students—part-time, full-time, any major or level
Faculty Mentors
- Must be a full-time tenured, tenure-track, or lecturer faculty member
- In special cases, part-time or visiting faculty may serve as a mentor with a co-mentor from full-time faculty
Award Details
- Student stipend: Maximum of $1300 (100 hours at $13/hour)
- Optional supplies funding: Up to $300 for research supplies/equipment (requires a detailed budget)
- Faculty mentor stipend: $500 (shared if two mentors)
Optional Academic Credit
- You may choose to earn 1–3 academic credits for your project (consult with your mentor and academic advisor)
Final Project and Presentation
You must present your final project or research. Dissemination opportunities may include:

- Identify a topic for your research/creative project.
- Identify a faculty member who will mentor you in implementing and presenting your project.
- Prepare all required attachments

- Faculty mentor documentation
- Detailed budget (only needed if applying for supplies funds)
